Visitor numbers rise at Shkodër museums as interest grows in archaeology, ethnography, and xhubleta

TIRANA, February 13 – Two key cultural institutions in Shkodër recorded a notable increase in visitors in 2025. The Historical Museum and the Castle Museum welcomed around 40,000 people, marking a 17 percent rise compared to 2024.

According to official data, the upward trend reflects growing attention to the city’s cultural heritage. Director of the Historical Museum Majlinda Laçaj said foreign tourist interest has steadily increased. She linked this development to the role that historical and cultural assets play in promoting tourism.

Laçaj explained that visitors focus primarily on the archaeological and ethnographic collections. In particular, the xhubleta traditional garments attract strong curiosity. UNESCO has recognized the xhubleta as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage, which has further enhanced the museum’s appeal for both domestic and foreign visitors.

She noted that guests show the greatest interest in objects representing early historical periods. Archaeological artifacts and ethnographic items draw the most attention.

Overall, the rise in visitor numbers highlights the growing role of Shkodër’s museums in cultural tourism development. The trend also underscores the need for continued investment in preserving and promoting the city’s historical values.
