World Television Day: A Reflection on Communication and Global Influence

Today marks World Television Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in resolution 51/205 on December 17, 1996, recognizing television’s growing impact on global decision-making. The day acknowledges the medium’s role in shedding light on international conflicts, threats to peace and security, and its potential to address crucial economic and social issues.

World Television Day is not merely a celebration of television itself, but rather the philosophy it represents. Television has become a symbol of communication and globalization in the modern era, shaping public opinion and influencing global politics.

Despite the rise of new platforms and rapidly advancing technology, television remains an essential communication tool. While traditional “on-air” broadcast channels are gradually being replaced by streaming services delivered via internet connections, television’s role in informing and connecting the world endures.

It remains to be seen whether the decline of traditional TV will continue, or if both traditional and digital formats will coexist, competing for the attention of global audiences.
