100th Anniversary of the Declaration of Albania’s Parliamentary Republic

On January 21, 1925, Albania was declared a parliamentary republic for the first time.
This new governance system was formalized with the approval of the Statute of the Albanian Republic by the Constitutional Assembly in March 1925, which convened on the fifth anniversary of the Congress of Lushnjë (January 21, 1920).
Ahmet Zogu was elected as the head of state, and the High Council was dissolved.
The Statute laid the foundation for the consolidation of independence and the establishment of democratic constitutional principles. It enshrined democratic values and freedoms, such as the separation of powers and the protection of human rights.
A significant achievement of the time was the adoption of the Penal Code. The president’s term was set at seven years. This republican system of governance lasted until September 1928, when Ahmet Zogu declared himself King of the Albanians.
