112 Years of Independence: Albania Turns Red and Black Today

Albania marks 112 years of independence this November 28, with the entire country adorned in red and black. Festive events are being held in every city, and the Albanian flag has symbolically “taken over” the nation. This historic day is also widely celebrated by the Albanian diaspora.
The occasion commemorates the Declaration of Independence on November 28, 1912, when Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag in Vlora.
It also coincides with the same date in 1443, when Skanderbeg raised the Albanian flag in Kruja, adding even greater historical significance.
For Albanians worldwide, November 28 is known as Flag Day. In Kosova, it is also recognized as an official holiday, declared by former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj.
Radio Tirana Turns 86
November 28 is not only Independence Day but also the anniversary of Radio Tirana, which celebrates 86 years of broadcasting. Radio Tirana has played a pivotal role in shaping Albanian media and has served as a training ground for many influential journalists. On this special day, Albanian Radio and Television extends its best wishes to all Albanians.
“Parade of Albanians”
As part of the celebrations, Tirana Municipality is hosting the second annual “Parade of Albanians,” starting on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard and concluding at Skanderbeg Square. The event brings together Albanians from all over the world in the capital.
To ensure the smooth running of the parade, Tirana Municipality and the State Police have implemented a traffic management plan, closing several roads to vehicles from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Traffic Diversions
Alternate routes will be available for vehicles during the parade. Streets such as Lek Dukagjini, Ibrahim Rugova, Abdyl Frashëri, Papa Gjon Pali II, Zhan D’Ark, Bajram Curri, and Ismail Qemali will be redirected. Public transportation, including major bus lines, will also follow alternate itineraries around the affected areas.
Albanian-Americans Raise the National Flag in New York
In Staten Island, New York, a symbolic flag-raising ceremony will take place on Ismail Qemali Street, organized by the Albanian-American community.
The event will include reenactments inspired by the film The Second November, with actors portraying Ismail Qemali and Isa Boletini dressed in traditional attire.
“This is a meaningful event,” said organizer Agim Kotaj. “Albanians will come together in large numbers, including participants from Albania, Kosova, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.”
Happy Independence Day to all Albanians!
