620th Anniversary of Skanderbeg’s Birth Commemorated in Lezha

The city of Lezha honored Albania’s national hero, George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, with a commemorative event marking the 620th anniversary of his birth, held at his memorial.

Deputy Mayor of Lezha, Eueda Molla, highlighted the enduring impact of Skanderbeg’s leadership, noting that under his command, Albanians were not just a people in defense, but a nation on the rise.

“On this important anniversary, we pay tribute to his legacy and the message he passed on to future generations. Skanderbeg was more than a strategist, he was a remarkable warrior who understood that a nation’s freedom, identity, and dignity are safeguarded through determination, unity, and unconditional love for the homeland,” said Molla.

Paulin Zefi, historian and Head of Cultural Heritage at the Lezha Municipality, emphasized the importance of commemorating Skanderbeg’s birth, despite historical uncertainties regarding the exact date.

“The birth of the young George Kastrioti, baptized in the name of Saint George, was a significant event not only for his family but for all Arbër people living within the Kastrioti Principality. The choice of name, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness, evokes the myth of Saint George slaying the dragon,” Zefi remarked.

The ceremony concluded with a music and literature concert dedicated to Skanderbeg, celebrating his legacy as a unifying symbol of Albanian national identity and resistance.
