UN Security Council / Kosovo on the agenda on 21 October

The UN Security Council is holding its next briefing on Kosovo on October 21st, the second for this year after the one on April 24th. Russia currently chairs the council’s monthly presidency.

Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, explained that on October 8, the Security Council will physically meet in its hall, 7 months after holding virtual meetings due to Covid19. According to preliminary announcements, the Special Envoy and UNMIK Chief Zahir Tani will brief member states on recent developments in Kosovo. Until October 9, members of the Security Council will receive UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ report on Kosovo.

On its basis, they will prepare the speech they will deliver at the meeting. The Security Council will closely follow the developments related to the Special Chambers of Kosovo, KSC. One of the issues that this body will deal with is Kosovo’s cooperation with the Chambers in question, given that some political actors in the country have criticized the work of the KSC. If Kosovo restricts cooperation with the Special Chambers, the Security Council will issue a statement urging the Kosovo authorities to adhere to its commitments to the tribunal.
