Marubi Photo Archive Moves Toward Full Conservation – Key Processes Include Digitization and Cataloging

The Marubi Archive is on its way to complete conservation, with crucial processes such as digitization, cataloging, and registration with the National Center of Cultural Heritage (IKTK) playing a significant role.
A visit to the “Marubi” Photography Museum in Shkodër offers an unforgettable journey through the remarkable photographs of the Marubi dynasty. Each image captured by these masters of photography tells a unique story, reflecting a special moment in Albanian life and culture, which today serves as a valuable treasure for all.
The preservation of this heritage relies heavily on processes such as conservation, cataloging, digitization, and registration with IKTK.
Lucjan Bedeni, Director of the National Museum of Photography “Marubi,” explained, “The cataloging process is advancing at the same pace as digitization, with conservation being the leading process, having already preserved nearly 70% of the new collection“.
The museum’s permanent local collection garnered the most attention from the 23,000 visitors last year, marking a historic record for the institution.
“Visitors, especially those seeing the museum for the first time, are particularly drawn to the local collections,” Bedeni noted.
The “Marubi” Museum houses over 500,000 glass and celluloid negatives, making it one of the richest photographic archives in Southeastern Europe. This year, the museum plans to unveil an exhibition abroad, slated for September.
