Nostalgia for Classic Albanian Films Fuels Restoration Efforts

The nostalgia for classic Albanian films has led many to become deeply attached to them, creating a collection of memorable quotes frequently used in daily conversations. However, many of these films have suffered from degradation and are now undergoing restoration. To shed light on the importance of this process in the history of Albanian cinema, renowned filmmaker Skënder Jaçe appeared on the show ‘Good Morning Albania’.

Jaçe emphasized that numerous films have deteriorated over time, and the restoration process is helping to bring them “back to life”. He also highlighted that Albania has a well-maintained state film archive.

“Like all nations, Albania has a very good state film archive, which is under continuous care. Film represents the life of a person,” Jaçe explained.

He added that there has been increasing interest in restoring these films, as time has caused the colors to fade. “They are now being revived through digital restoration in 4K format. They are being showcased at premieres and promoted to the Albanian public,” Jaçe noted.

Jaçe pointed out the impact of degradation, especially in films featuring beloved Albanian actors. “The latest film by Piro Milkani, ‘Victory over Death’, is almost ready and will soon premiere. Many others are waiting their turn, as they’ve lost their colors and can no longer be viewed,” he shared.

Addressing questions about the historical context of Albanian films, Jaçe stressed that it’s impossible to judge a work from an era that once existed in Albania. “You cannot judge a work from a time that existed in Albania. There’s a whole history behind it, and younger generations need to understand the ideology and mentality of the people from those years. Beyond the propaganda of the time, these films hold value. Stopping the films would be akin to reverting to censorship,” he stated.

Jaçe further explained the restoration process, which is meticulous and time-consuming. “It depends on the companies handling the restoration. Some companies work on each frame and second individually, and this process can take up to six months. The film is scanned, scratches are removed, colors are restored, and soundtracks are cleaned. It’s a labor-intensive process, but today’s technology allows us to achieve it. The film is brought back as though it were newly created,” Jaçe concluded.
