Celebrating March 7th – Teacher’s Day

Teacher’s Day, celebrated on March 7th, is observed across all Albanian territories today.
Schools throughout the country hold various activities to express gratitude for the teachers’ work in shaping the future of the younger generation.
This day is not only significant educationally but also culturally, as it recalls the first Albanian language teachers.
Teacher’s Day honors all educators in schools and universities. On this day, we celebrate the finest traditions of the Albanian national education system and the esteemed role of the teacher.
Throughout history, Albanian teachers, in every region, have been more than just educators. They were patriots, enlightened individuals, humanitarians, and artists in their own right.
In March 1887, the first Albanian school was opened in Korça, with Pandeli Sotiri as its first teacher and director. This event was a monumental achievement for the Albanian people, as prior to this, education was carried out secretly, within homes, under the constraints of Ottoman Conquest. March 7th, therefore, became Teacher’s Day in Albania, commemorating this key cultural and historical milestone.
The Korça school remained open for almost 20 years, under the guidance of key figures of the Albanian Renaissance, including Pandeli Sotiri, Petro Nini Luarasi, Nuçi Naçi, Thoma Avrami, and others. The immense contribution of these patriots and influential activists is evident in their unwavering commitment to spreading knowledge and empowering the people.
