Vangjush Mio’s House-Museum: A Cultural Treasure in Korça

One of the many gems that make Korça a must-visit destination is undoubtedly the House-Museum of the painter Vangjush Mio.

This museum is a sanctuary where history and art converge, offering a glimpse into the era when Mio, with his brushes and colors, brought to life extraordinary, one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Throughout his 40-year career, Mio produced more than 200 drawings and 500 paintings. Around 60 of these works are housed in the National Gallery of Arts, while the rest are displayed in this home, now a haven for admirers of Impressionism.

Vangjush Mio is celebrated as the “father of modern and contemporary Albanian painting.” Born on March 5, 1891, in Korça, he is best known for his landscapes and is regarded as the most refined Albanian landscape painter of the 20th century.

Among the genres he mastered are portraits, compositions, nudes, and landscapes, which form a significant portion of his artistic oeuvre. “Winter in Korça,” “Aspects of Drenova,” “Dishnica,” “Boboshtica,” “Vithkuqi,” “The Manas of Drenova,” and “Haymakers” are just a few of his most celebrated landscape works. Hundreds of paintings, drawings, and sketches are preserved in the intimate setting of Vangjush Mio’s house in Korça.

Yet, his artistic legacy extends beyond painting. In 2023, his photographic archive was also digitized, encompassing approximately 450 negatives from the 1930s-1940s. These photographs offer a visual journey through the soul of Albanian cities, capturing characteristic homes, forgotten cult objects, pastoral scenes, and the timeless beauty of the villages of the Southeast.
