Shkodër’s Museum and Memorial Project: A Cohesive Tribute to the Suffering Under Communism

The Mayor of Shkodër, Benet Beci, provided further insights today, a day after the initial presentation, about the project for the Museum and Memorial of Testimony and Remembrance. This initiative aims to honor the painful history of suffering under the communist regime with the respect it deserves.

Beci outlined that the project is divided into four main interventions. The museum will offer a comprehensive interpretation of the role of the detention center, the crimes committed there, and the historical context. The architecture and exhibitions are thoughtfully integrated to create a cohesive, immersive experience that highlights the significance of the site.

“The prison will be restored to its original condition from the time when it was operational, with the upper-level gallery open to visitors. A new interpretation will provide a sensory experience that reflects the daily life of the prisoners. Specific elements will be restored to their original state to enhance the site’s narrative,” Beci explained.

The Mayor of Shkodër further clarified that the memorial will be a newly created public space, dedicated to honoring the victims and hosting ceremonies that were previously held within the museum. This space will also serve as an urban area, easily accessible from the main road, emphasizing the importance of preventing the recurrence of such events while memorializing the victims.

Moreover, the Education and Research Center will be a public space within the museum, focused on organizing temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, and events. “It may also house a research department responsible for collecting and archiving information, as well as curating temporary or traveling exhibitions,” Beci added, sharing visuals of the project.

This project, along with other transformative initiatives for Shkodër, was presented yesterday during an event attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
