Verdi’s Aida Captivates Audiences in Epic Production Directed by Franco Zeffirelli

The opera Aida by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi premiered last night at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, presented as a monumental production under the visionary direction of the legendary Franco Zeffirelli.

This epic masterpiece, one of the most iconic works in the global operatic canon, featured soprano Eva Golemi in the title role of Aida and Ivana Hoxha as Amneris. The second cast included Maria Teresa Leva and Tamta Tarelashvili.

The principal cast also included Carlos Cardoso, Armando Likaj, Bledar Domi, Xhieldo Hyseni, Matis Xheli, Dorina Selimaj, and others.

The Symphonic Orchestra, soloists, and the Choir of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet were conducted by Maestro Sergio Alapont and Maestro Dritan Lumshi.

Although Aida has been staged multiple times at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, it has once again captivated audiences, with tickets for the first two performances selling out in record time.

The libretto of Aida unfolds a passionate and forbidden love triangle between Aida, the Ethiopian princess, Radamès, the commander of the Egyptian army, and Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter.

The plot takes a pivotal turn when Radamès is ordered to fight against Ethiopia, unknowingly revealing to Aida, the Ethiopian princess, the entire military strategy. Aida faces an agonizing choice between loyalty to her country and love for Radamès. Similarly, Radamès is torn between his devotion to Aida and his duty to his homeland, ultimately betraying his nation for her.

Verdi’s mesmerizing score, with powerful choruses, stirring arias, and sweeping orchestral passages, amplifies the opera’s emotional depth.

This tale of love, sacrifice, and triumph, in a production that showcases the grandeur of opera at its pinnacle, will return for additional performances on February 8, 10, and 12.
