International Children’s Book Day 2025: The Netherlands Takes the Lead

Since 1967, April 2 has been celebrated as International Children’s Book Day, fostering a love of reading and drawing attention to literature for young audiences.

This date was chosen in honor of the renowned Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tales have educated and entertained generations of children worldwide.

Each year, a theme is designated, an official poster is selected for International Children’s Book Day, and an author is invited to write a message addressed to children across the globe.

For 2025, the Netherlands is sponsoring International Children’s Book Day, with the official poster designed by two Dutch children’s book creators. The theme for the year is “The Freedom of Imagination,” and its motto is derived from the final line of the poem The Language of Figures:

“Imagine beyond my poetry and do not hesitate: these words belong to you, even though they come from me.”

High-quality children’s literature nurtures and stimulates the imagination of young readers. Such books encourage children to explore their creative potential and view the world through new perspectives. A well-crafted book invites readers to interpret its words, allowing them, in a sense, to compose their own stories.

The 2025 featured author is Rian Visser, a Dutch children’s book writer and poet known for her engaging and thought-provoking works, widely cherished by young readers. From 2024 to 2026, she holds the official title of Dutch Children’s Book Laureate.
