Aubrey Herbert: The British Diplomat Who Championed Albania’s Independence

On April 3, 1880, Colonel Aubrey Herbert was born—a British military officer, diplomat, traveler, and intelligence officer. A fervent advocate of Albania’s independence, Herbert forged a deep connection with the country following his visits in 1907, 1911, and 1913.

His contributions to Albania were so significant that he was twice offered the Albanian throne. From 1911 until his passing, he served as a Conservative Member of the British Parliament, where he continued to champion the Albanian cause.

The Herbert family as a whole nurtured a profound and enduring affinity for Albania. In honor of her late son, Aubrey, Lady Elisabeth Carnarvon inaugurated a school in Kavajë, reinforcing the family’s longstanding philanthropic engagement in Albania during the 1920s.

Lady Carnarvon also facilitated the establishment of the Library for Albanian Youth, which housed a collection of 5,000 foreign-language books, further enriching Albania’s educational landscape.

Colonel Herbert struggled with severe visual impairment for much of his life and was nearly blind by his early forties. He passed away on September 26, 1923, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering support for Albania’s national aspirations.
