Memorials Honor the 1999 Kosovar Exodus

The “Kosovar Exodus” memorial in Kukës and the “Wall of Memory” in Bllacë honor the suffering of Kosovo Albanians during the 1999 war.
Both monuments thank Albanians for sheltering refugees. The Kukës memorial displays photos from the time. The Bllacë monument symbolizes the Albanian mother’s sacrifice.
From 1998 to 1999, around 1 million Kosovo Albanians fled violence and ethnic cleansing by Serbian forces. It was one of Europe’s largest displacements since World War II.
Cities like Kukës, Hasi, Tropoja, Tirana, Durrës, and Elbasan welcomed thousands. Albanian families opened their homes, showing deep solidarity and generosity.
