Korçë Marks 45 Years of the Medieval Art Museum

Korçë celebrated the 45th anniversary of the National Museum of Medieval Art. The event honored the museum’s cultural value and those who built and shaped it.
First, Director Fjoralba Prifti thanked architect Pirro Thomo for helping found the museum. Then, she praised staff who worked hard to preserve its heritage, even during difficult times.
Next, she gave certificates to key contributors like Tatiana Vinjau Caca, Avni Bilbili, and others. She also thanked religious communities, especially the Orthodox clergy, for long-term support.
Moreover, she recognized Korçë citizens for protecting the city’s cultural treasures. She also mentioned other founders, including Andromaqi Gjergji and Skënder Anamali.
The museum opened on April 26, 1980, inside the “Life-Giving Spring” Church. Despite religious bans at the time, the museum preserved sacred art and national identity.
Today, it holds the world’s largest collection of Albanian icons. It teaches visitors about faith, tradition, and history.
After 1967, the museum gathered around 6,000 icons from Korçë and other cities. Experts like Theofan Popa saved many from communist destruction.
Korçë was chosen for its rich past. The museum became Albania’s first major national museum. It included an exhibition space and a restoration center.
Later, after the regime fell, the museum faced challenges. Still, it survived thanks to committed staff and strong community support.
Since 2016, it has operated in a modern building. Now, it meets European standards and serves as a source of national pride.
Finally, the museum blends medieval art with modern design. It offers a unique and powerful experience to every visitor.
