PM Rama: Detention without trial of Thaçi an injustice at the heart of Europe

TIRANA, December 18 – Prime Minister Edi Rama visited today in The Hague former Kosovan President Hashim Thaçi, who remained in pre-trial detention since November 2020.
In a social media reaction, Rama said he found Thaçi calm and composed. However, he noted restrictions on what he described as basic rights.
Meanwhile, Rama described the continued detention of Thaçi and former leaders of the Kosova Liberation Army as a serious injustice. He said it took place at the heart of democratic Europe and relied on funding from taxpayers of democratic countries.
Earlier today, Rama said Thaçi had been removed from his office without trial or formal charges. He recalled that voters in Kosova had elected Thaçi as president.
During the visit, Rama said they discussed family matters, shared friends, Albania, and Kosova. They also spoke about books Thaçi had read during his detention, including works Rama had previously brought him.
At the same time, Rama reiterated his criticism of the international justice process. He said the case represented a profound injustice toward a European people who, in his words, freed themselves from an oppressive regime.
Finally, Rama expressed support for Kosova, the Kosova Liberation Army, and those held in detention for more than five years without trial.
