Joint statement with PM Rama, PM Netanyahu highlights Albania’s historic role and announces Chamber of Commerce in Jerusalem

TIRANA, January 26 – During a joint press statement with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted Albania’s historical legacy and the current strength of bilateral relations.
At the outset, Netanyahu focused on Albania’s role during the Holocaust. He said Albania was the only European country where the Jewish population increased during that period.
According to him, this outcome resulted from Albanians protecting Jewish families already living in the country. In addition, others fleeing persecution were welcomed and sheltered.
In this regard, Netanyahu described Albania’s actions as an expression of human dignity and moral responsibility. He said this example deserves wider international recognition.
Building on this historical reference, the Israeli prime minister linked the past to present-day relations. He highlighted Albania’s support for Israel in its fight against Hamas.
Alongside political ties, Netanyahu addressed people-to-people relations. He pointed to a sharp increase in Israeli tourism to Albania in recent years.
As he explained, visitor numbers have risen several times over. He also described Albania as an appealing destination for Israeli travelers.
Moving to economic cooperation, Netanyahu noted growing interest from Israeli companies. He said Albania is increasingly seen as a country with strong investment potential.
To formalise this momentum, a new step has been planned. Netanyahu announced the opening of a Chamber of Commerce in Jerusalem.
According to him, the initiative aims to strengthen trade and investment links between the two countries. The opening is expected to take place with the participation of Prime Minister Rama.
In conclusion, Netanyahu said relations between Albania and Israel extend beyond economic or political interests. He described them as rooted in historical closeness, mutual understanding, and a sense of brotherhood between the two peoples.
