FM Spiropali: EU integration is Albania’s strategic interest and US priority

TIRANA, February 6 – During her visit to Washington, Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali spoke at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She discussed Albania’s EU path with expert Edward Joseph, professors, students, and Albanian-Americans.

Spiropali highlighted Albania’s transformation from one of Europe’s most isolated countries to an EU candidate. She said the country opened all negotiation chapters in just 13 months. She stressed that implementing reforms remains challenging. Albania aims to close chapters by 2027 and join the EU by 2030. Key areas include rule of law, fighting crime and corruption, and strengthening democratic institutions.

She noted that US support has been vital, especially for justice reform and transparency. Spiropali described Albania’s Western orientation as strategic, rooted in identity and security, not temporary.

The Minister also attended the “Western Balkans Forward” summit, speaking on the EU enlargement imperative. She said enlargement strengthens European security and regional cooperation. She warned that delays create strategic gaps that allow hostile influences, especially from Russia.

Spiropali emphasized that EU enlargement in the Western Balkans is a strategic interest for both the EU and the US. It supports NATO cohesion, democratic resilience, and counters harmful external influence.

Finally, she mentioned President Trump’s invitation to Prime Minister Rama to join the Peace Board as a sign of political trust and recognition of Albania’s constructive international role.
