FM Spiropali expresses concern over Hague developments, calls for justice based on truth and reconciliation

TIRANA, February 10 – Albanian Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali reacted to the Special Court in The Hague after the prosecution presented sentence requests against former KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi.

She said the five-year pre-trial detention raises serious questions. In addition, she noted that the nature of the charges challenges proportionality, due process, and respect for human rights.

Spiropali added that the situation fuels the perception of one-sided harshness. She contrasted it with the treatment of Serbian regime officials. At the same time, many crimes committed by Serbian forces against Kosova’s civilians remain unpunished.

The minister warned that this imbalance risks creating the impression of double standards. As a result, public confidence in international justice could weaken.

She stressed that international justice must remain impartial and evidence-based. Otherwise, perceptions of selective treatment could damage trust and reopen regional wounds.

Spiropali described the KLA as a liberation movement. She pointed out that it received broad international support against a regime that used systematic violence, ethnic cleansing, and committed widely documented crimes against civilians.

She emphasized that courts must distinguish between individual criminal responsibility and the historical context of the war for freedom. In addition, the court must ensure that the prosecution’s approach does not unjustly affect Kosova’s independence or the dignity of those who fought.

She added that only fair decisions, grounded in evidence and the highest legal standards, can protect historical memory. Furthermore, justice should serve truth and reconciliation rather than rewrite history or minimize internationally recognized responsibilities for wartime crimes.

Spiropali highlighted the need to conclude proceedings promptly. She also underlined that respect for fair trial standards is essential. Moreover, she noted that Kosova’s future and regional stability depend on reliable justice.

The minister concluded that Albania will monitor the process closely. She reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the rule of law, international justice, and the dignity of Kosova’s liberation struggle.
