Albania assumes international responsibility, FM Spiropali says

TIRANA, February 19 – The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Elisa Spiropali, said that Albania is no longer a country waiting in the corridors of international diplomacy. Instead, she said, Albania speaks, proposes, mediates, and assumes responsibility.

She made the remarks in the Parliament of Albania while presenting the draft law “On the Foreign Service in the Republic of Albania”.

According to Spiropali, this new reality did not happen by chance. She said it reflects a deep political, institutional, and diplomatic transformation led by Prime Minister Edi Rama. He has positioned Albania among countries with international influence, initiative, and credibility.

She explained that Albania used to seek attention without always having the weight to attract it. She noted that the country once knocked on doors without knowing how to enter. Today, she said, Albania has moved from being a candidate-state aspirant to a country aiming to complete negotiations by 2027. Furthermore, she emphasized that Albania has changed from being seen as a problem to becoming a sought-after partner in international forums. She added that the country now proposes regional initiatives, mediates dialogue, and takes international responsibility.

Spiropali stressed that the global context has grown more uncertain than just a few years ago. She noted that conflict has returned to the European continent. Therefore, she said, states are judged not only by their size but also by the clarity of their direction, their credibility as partners, and their ability to assume responsibility.

In this context, Spiropali stated that Albania has chosen its path clearly: European Union membership, strengthening the transatlantic alliance, and playing an active role in regional stability. She added that this is no longer an abstract aspiration but a concrete state project.
