Albania and sovereign military order of Malta reaffirm long-standing cooperation

TIRANA, March 19 – President Bajram Begaj and Fra’ John T. Dunlap, Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, reaffirmed the strong diplomatic and cooperative ties between Albania and the Order. Their discussions highlighted decades of support in healthcare, education, social assistance, emergency response, and civil protection through Malteser Albania volunteers.

President Begaj praised Albania’s tradition of religious harmony, calling it a historical legacy and an example of coexistence. He also underlined Albania’s active role in fostering regional cooperation in the Western Balkans and maintaining strong relations with neighboring countries.

The leaders discussed European integration, with Begaj noting that a united Europe would be incomplete without Albania, Kosova, and other Western Balkan states. He welcomed the Order’s contribution to expanding international recognition of Kosova’s independence, reinforcing stability and peace in the region.

In recognition of these longstanding ties, Fra’ John T. Dunlap awarded President Begaj the Order’s “Collar Pro Merito Melitens.” The President reciprocated by honoring the Grand Master with the “Grand Star of the Supreme Order of the Eagle,” symbolizing continued friendship and cooperation.
