Monastery of Saint Demetrius in Qeparo: An Architectural and Cultural Heritage Masterpiece

The village of Qeparo, situated 13 kilometers south of Himara, is a notable tourist destination that offers an ideal combination of sea and mountain landscapes.

Visitors who choose to spend their summer holidays in the southern part of the country have the opportunity to explore the Monastery of Saint Demetrius.

This religious edifice is regarded as a jewel of architectural and cultural heritage.

Located in the lower village of Qeparo, the Monastery of Saint Demetrius features white walls and has been reconstructed in a manner similar to the church bearing the same name.

The monastery is part of a complex that includes the school building and the residence for church personnel.

Constructed around 1730, the Monastery of Saint Demetrius is notable for its wooden iconostasis, which is adorned with figures of angels and acanthus leaves. This iconostasis represents a cultural treasure for the village, although it has been partially looted by illegal trafficking visitors and those purportedly tasked with safeguarding cultural monuments, according to the Regional Directorate of National Culture in Vlora.
