PM Rama outlines economic targets and addresses investment debates in Tirana rally

TIRANA, June 12 – At a major event marking the 35th anniversary of the political formation in Tirana, Prime Minister Edi Rama addressed development challenges, investment projects, environmental protection, and the country’s long-term economic vision.
To begin with, he stressed the importance of democratic debate while warning against prejudgment of major development projects. In this regard, he said public discussion must remain grounded in facts and institutional processes.
Moving to investment policy, Rama said the Zvërnec project represents the largest proposed investment in Albania’s history. At the same time, he said Albania cannot afford to reject such opportunities. In this context, he linked environmental protection with economic development.
From a broader perspective, he argued that protecting nature does not require limiting economic growth. Instead, he said sustainable development depends on regulated expansion and strong institutional oversight.
With regard to decision-making, he said the project remains open to debate and scrutiny. However, he added that early rejection of initiatives weakens constructive policymaking.
Turning to international reactions, Rama said some criticism reflects political motivations rather than environmental concerns. In this connection, he warned that external political disputes should not be transferred to Albania.
Likewise, he said global political tensions must not involve Albanian citizens. In parallel, he added that domestic debate should not serve foreign political agendas.
Referring to international figures, he said their attention appears more political than environmental. Even so, he said environmental concerns should still be applied consistently across all cases.
Finally, he said Albania aims to develop a high-end tourism sector based on sustainability and tradition. In conclusion, he said this strategy supports long-term economic objectives.
