US marks 250th Independence Day in Tirana, VanHorn highlights strong ties with Albania

TIRANA, June 18 – The United States Embassy in Tirana organized a reception for the 250th anniversary of US Independence. US Chargé d’Affaires Nancy VanHorn attended the ceremony and addressed guests during the event. She praised relations between the United States and Albania and highlighted shared commitments to freedom and democracy. She thanked Albanian authorities, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests, describing the anniversary as a historic milestone.

VanHorn referred to the Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776. The document set out the principles of equality, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. She said these ideals have influenced many countries beyond the United States. She also praised Albania’s transition from isolation and dictatorship to democracy, describing it as a major success story.

She highlighted the memory of two former Albanian employees of the US Embassy, Loni Adami and Kol Kuqali, who were killed during the communist period after refusing to give false testimony against the United States. She said she recently met their descendants and noted that their families reflect resilience and a lasting belief in freedom.

VanHorn also highlighted cooperation between Albania and the United States in security, economy, education, and democratic values. She thanked contributors from multiple sectors, including the military, emergency services, education, business, media, and communities. She said the partnership between the two countries is stronger than ever.
