Religious communities unite to address climate change and environmental protection

Religious leaders, local officials and civil society representatives met in Elbasan to discuss environmental protection and climate change. They called for stronger cooperation between faith communities, public institutions and schools.
The meeting took place at the Elbasan Prefecture during Democracy Week. The Woman Center for Development and Culture Albania launched the initiative “Culture of Encounter: Interfaith Dialogue in Action for Climate Protection,” in cooperation with Elbasan Municipality and the Interfaith Cooperation Centre.
Participants discussed pollution, forest fires, waste burning, public health and environmental education for young people. Speakers highlighted the role of religious institutions in raising public awareness. They also called for greater involvement by women leaders and stronger cooperation with educational institutions.
The meeting addressed infrastructure at places of worship and emergency preparedness. Organisers said they would compile the recommendations in a practical guide and discuss them with local institutions to identify concrete measures.
The initiative receives support from the International King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue.
