Berat Ancient Codices

The Purple Codex of Berat is a very important manuscript of the beginnings of Biblical writings. Judging by the writing technique, it is thought that it was written in the 6th century BC. There are a total of 190 pages, written with letters cast in silver. The calligraphy is special while the letters are capitalized (majuscule). It contains two gospels: according to Matthew and according to Mark. The material of the manuscript is deep red (purple) parchment from which it got its name. Other important parts of the codex are cast in gold. The cover of the manuscript belongs to a later time than the work, it is metal and decorated with biblical scenes.

The Golden Codex belongs to the 9th century and is written in small “minuscule” letters. It contains the 4 gospels: according to John, Luke, Mark and Matthew. The figures of the evangelists are surrounded by decorative frames built with floral and geometric motifs, circles and flowers.

Both codices of Berat are part of the Memory of the World. Former UNESCO Director-General, Koïchiro MATSUURA, referring to the two Albanian codices has said that they are true treasures of the world’s spiritual heritage. “The Purple Codex of Berat”, one of the oldest versions of the New Testament, constitutes an essential reference for evangelical literature and, more generally, for Christian culture. UNESCO pays special attention to the preservation of this unique heritage of the development of ancient biblical and liturgical literature throughout world history.
