Albanian public broadcaster marks 66 years and begins transformation process

TIRANA, April 29 – The Albanian Radio and Television (RTSH) marks 66 years since the start of its broadcasting operations, highlighting its role in public information, cultural preservation, and the development of national arts. It began transmissions in 1960 within a limited area and later expanded nationwide, now covering the largest geographical reach among audiovisual media in the country.

The public broadcaster continues its work under its current leadership, with Eni Vasili as Director General, the first woman to hold the position. The institution has launched a formal transformation process aimed at improving proximity to audiences, content quality, and professional standards. The decision followed a unanimous vote by the governing board after a nine-month institutional review, aligned with European public broadcasting principles.

Over more than six decades, the broadcaster has produced a wide range of programmes, including documentaries, drama series, films, concerts, theatre productions, and national music festivals. It has also played a central role in shaping television journalism and cultural programming in the country.

The institution highlighted the contribution of journalists, artists, musicians, writers, technicians, camera operators, and production staff who have supported its output over the years.

It said it aims to continue adapting to technological developments and changes in the media environment while maintaining its public service mission.
