Archival Photo from 1947 Shows the Early Days of the National Library of Albania

An archival photograph from 1947, preserved by the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATSH), shows the former National Library building in both exterior and interior views during the early post–World War II period.

The image captures a moment when Albania rebuilds its cultural institutions after the war. As a result, it reflects the early stages of institutional reorganization and cultural development.

Today, the building functions as the “Sotir Kolea” Center Sotir Kolea Center. It honors lexicographer, folklorist, and publicist Sotir Kolea, who plays a key role in Albanian library science.

In addition, the photograph highlights a key transitional period in Albania’s cultural history. It shows how institutions begin to take shape and strengthen their role in preserving national memory.

Furthermore, the former library serves the public again today. It houses rare books and archival materials that authorities recover from storage and long-term hidden collections.

Meanwhile, restoration efforts modernize the building and reopen it to visitors. The Albanian government funds the project with support from the EU program “EU4Culture”.

As a result, the site now combines historical preservation with public access and cultural education, reinforcing its importance in Albania’s heritage system.
