ArTurbina Hosts Karnavalet e Korçës for Three More Performances

Last night, the comedy Karnavalet e Korçës (“The Carnivals of Korça”) directed by Erion Isai premiered at the National Theatre. The performance will be staged at ArTurbina for three more nights (February 28, and March 1, 2).

Karnavalet e Korçës, directed by Erion Isai, has received acclaim both in Albania and abroad (Athens). It was awarded the title of best play at the 11th edition of the National Comedy Festival, Koko Fest.

The characters Nikollaqi, Olimbia, Afroviti, and others were brought to life by a selected cast of actors. The Korçan actor Arben Dervishi, who returned to the stage after a 12-year break, played the role of the merchant Nikollaq Jorganxhi, actress Zamira Kita portrayed Olimbia, and actress Paola Kodra played Afroviti.

The play is based on the characters created by Spiro Çomora: Nikollaq and Olimbi Jorganxhi, powerful merchants in Korça, who are looking for a husband for their 36-year-old daughter, Afroviti.

The marriage faces obstacles in the selection of candidates due to Olimbia’s uncompromising desire to buy her daughter a piano instead of just a dowry. The revival of Karnavalet e Korçës presents a fresh take, depicting a vicious cycle of bullying, social depression, visual, virtual, societal, and economic struggles.
