Assembly of Albania to declare Iran a state sponsor of terrorism

TIRANA, March 17 – The Assembly of Albania will vote today on a draft resolution from the Socialist Party to designate the Islamic Republic of Iran as a “State Sponsor of Terrorism” and a “State Using Terrorist Means.” The resolution also seeks to list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, said Albania takes this step to align with its strategic ally, the United States. He called on democratic countries, international organizations, and Albania’s partners to adopt coordinated measures against state-sponsored terrorism and strengthen global cooperation in tackling these threats.

The opposition Democratic Party rejected the measure. Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group, said yesterday that his members would skip today’s plenary session, calling it illegal. He argued that a parliament without an agenda, debate, or speaking rights for the opposition is no longer a functioning legislature but a platform for government propaganda.

The resolution is expected to intensify political tensions and spark debate over parliamentary procedures and Albania’s foreign policy direction. Lawmakers from both sides are preparing for a heated session.
