Berlin conference: PM Rama warns of digital misinformation storm over coastal project, highlights Albania’s AI-driven reforms

TIRANA, June 17 – Prime Minister Edi Rama addressed protests against coastal development projects in Zvërnec during the Annual Conference of the Eastern Bloc Commission in Berlin. He said the project carries European relevance and argued that the public debate highlights challenges to democratic trust.
Rama criticized the spread of false information online. He described it as a threat to democratic security while distinguishing it from freedom of speech. He said algorithms amplify anger more than facts.
He also referred to a coastal tourism project that, according to him, turned into a “digital storm” of conspiracy theories and unverified claims. He said Europe needs protection against algorithmic manipulation, alongside military defence tools.
Rama said Albania has digitised 95% of public services. He added that the government is expanding artificial intelligence across public administration. He said future global competition will depend on innovation and technology rather than only geopolitics.
He also said Albania is reducing bureaucracy and redesigning public administration around technology. He described digital transformation as a key government priority.
