The Biotechnology and Genetics Research Center presented findings from the project “Autoimmune Diseases of the Nervous System: Diagnostic Algorithms and Immunogenetic Correlations” during a workshop organized in collaboration with the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation (AKKSHI) and QSUNT’s Neurology and Pediatrics University Services.

The President of the Academy of Sciences, Skënder Gjinushi, emphasized the importance of investing in medicine to integrate advanced technologies and deliver applied research that benefits society.

Led by academician Genc Sulçebe and professor Jera Kruja, the workshop highlighted the center’s pioneering work in introducing new laboratory diagnostics for autoimmune neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, myasthenia gravis, and autoimmune encephalitis.

Preliminary research has identified five HLA genetic alleles predisposing Albanians to multiple sclerosis and six protective alleles rarely present in affected individuals.
