CALENDAR-March 29th

On March 29, 1925, Bajram Curri, one of the activists of the Movement, was killed in a cave in the Dragobia Gorge.

Ismail Qemali, Luigj Gurakuqi and Isa Boletini set off on the yacht Bourbon, Duka De Monpensier, from Vlora Pier to Europe. Their aim was to secure the borders and the integrity of the newborn Albanian State.

In the cave of Dragobi, brave Kosovar Bajram Curri, hero of the people, fell heroically fighting against Ahmet Zog’s mercenaries. About this great loss, Faik Konica writes in the “Dielli” newspaper published in Boston. Fan Noli wrote on this occasion the elegy that remains among the most beautiful creations of Albanian literature.

He was among the main leaders of the revolutionary democratic forces that defeated the Zogist guilds and paved the way for the victory of the June Movement of 1924. In the fall of 1924 he went to Geneva to present to the League of Nations the issue of the rights of the savagely oppressed Albanian population of Kosovo from the Serbs. He continued the fight against internal reaction and Serbian chauvinists even after the suppression of the June Movement.

On March 29, 1925, the Government of Zog, represented by the Minister of Finance Myfit Libohova, signed with a group of Italian financiers the convention for the establishment of the Albanian National Bank.

On March 29, 1945, the Albanian government, emerging from the war, made an official request for the admission of the Republic of Albania to the United Nations.

On March 29, 1996, the Assembly of the Republic of Albania in its plenary session approved the civil procedure code of the Republic of Albania.
