Day of Martyrs – May 5

TIRANA, May 5 – May 5 marks the Day of Martyrs, a national day of remembrance for those who gave their lives for freedom, independence, and democracy.

Commemorative ceremonies take place each year at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Tirana and in other municipalities across the country.

The date originates from May 5, 1942, when Qemal Stafa, a Hero of the People and a leading figure of the WWII anti-fascist resistance, was killed. The day reflects both his death and the sacrifice of an entire generation that fought for national liberation.

After independence in 1912 and until 1945, the Albanian state did not define a legal status for martyrs. During the National Liberation War, early efforts began to honour those who fell in combat. After liberation, on August 28, 1945, the Antifascist National Liberation Council Presidium approved Law No. 109 on financial support for families of fallen fighters and war invalids. The law also included those who fought in earlier historical periods, including the National Renaissance and independence wars.

In the 1960s, the status of martyrs expanded further under the term “Martyr of the Homeland”. The legislation also established Martyrs’ Cemeteries across all regional centres.

In 1992–1993, the political transition led to changes in the legal framework. In 2000, Law No. 8607, dated 27 April, “On the Status of the Martyr of the Homeland”, was approved. It included martyrs from all historical periods, including those who fell in 1997–1999 in Albania and in the Liberation War of Kosova.
