FM Spiropali: Albania had 15 times more Jews at the end of World War II

TIRANA, January 27 – The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs organized today the event “Bridge Connecting Generations” on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
During the event, Minister Elisa Spiropali said that in yesterday’s historic session at the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, Prime Minister Edi Rama highlighted Albania’s extraordinary role in protecting Jews during the darkest chapter of humanity, the Holocaust.
She recalled that in 1943, the Albanian people and authorities responded to Nazi Germany’s ultimatum with “Gold yes, Jews no.”
Spiropali underlined that Albania was the only country in Europe that finished World War II with 15 times more Jews than it had at the start.
She added that Albania’s moral code gave the country the strength to protect diversity and honor life.
The minister said Albania takes pride in this moral achievement, which deserves global recognition, and noted that it is not the only example in the country’s history of sheltering and protecting foreigners and people in need.
Spiropali also emphasized that Albania joined President Trump’s Peace Board through Prime Minister Rama’s participation, showing a nation that emerged from totalitarian darkness with exemplary interfaith brotherhood and no ethnic divisions.
She concluded that Albania has much to demonstrate and offer the world in this format, aiming to resolve both old and new conflicts through noble goals.
