Giro d’Italia – Manastirliu: Albania’s Honor to Host the Historic Event for the First Time

In a festive atmosphere at Skanderbeg Square, the 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia officially kicked off. This world-renowned cycling event, one of Italy’s most prestigious, is making its debut in Albania.

A massive stage was set in the heart of Tirana, where 23 teams were introduced, while the organizers celebrated Albanian culture with traditional performances by the National Ensemble of Songs and Dances, accompanied by local musicians and singers.

Ogerta Manastirliu, Albania’s Minister of Education and Sports, addressed the event, welcoming the Italian audience and emphasizing the significance of the occasion.

“For us, Giro d’Italia represents a momentous milestone,” Manastirliu said. “This is the first time it is coming to Albania, marking a historic moment for both Albanian sports and the global promotion of our culture, tourism, and landscapes”.

She further stated, “It’s a great honor for us, and we are truly proud that Giro d’Italia’s ‘Grande Partenza’ is happening in Albania for the first time. This event places Albania on the international map of high-caliber sporting events. The Giro d’Italia will take place across three of our cities: Durrës, Tirana, and Vlora, on May 9, 10, and 11. This will be accompanied by a variety of cultural and artistic events, and we invite everyone to join and be a part of them.”

In her closing remarks, Manastirliu extended a warm welcome to the global Giro d’Italia audience, saying, “Welcome to Albania, welcome to Tirana, and let the Giro d’Italia begin here, from Albania, from Tirana”.

Following the Minister’s speech, the event continued with the official introduction of the 23 participating teams, marking the start of this historic sporting event in Albania.
