Ismail Qemali Resigns as Prime Minister of Albania After 111 Years

111 years ago, Ismail Qemali, the first Prime Minister of Albania, resigned from his position. On January 2, 1914, just before his resignation, he wrote a letter to Aqif Pasha, Prefect of Elbasan, analyzing the political situation and expressing concerns about internal divisions in Albania. Despite the challenges, he remained optimistic and believed that Albania’s future was secure.

Qemali’s resignation created a void that the International Control Commission could not fill. He left Vlora for Italy and then France, advising his followers to continue working together, as he believed the country’s destiny would eventually improve.

Beqiri also shares the protocol documenting Qemali’s resignation, where he delegated power to the International Control Commission, which assumed control of Albania on behalf of the Great Powers.

Aqif Pasha Elbasani sent a message of respect for Qemali’s patriotism. After his resignation, Qemali briefly stayed in Nice before returning to Albania in May 1914, where he supported the appointment of a new sovereign, despite his disappointment with the decision.
