Italian Academics Praise Arbëresh Singer’s Lyrics at Sanremo Festival

At the “Sanremo 2025” Music Festival, a high-profile televised song competition in Italy, which is currently underway at the Ariston Theatre, with 29 singers competing for the prestigious Sanremo golden trophy, this year is Dario Brunori, who has gained significant support from the Arbëresh communities.
The Center for Arbëresh Studies and Publications has announced that the Arbëresh villages will rally behind the Calabrian singer-songwriter during his participation in the festival. This backing follows Brunori’s heartfelt gesture last summer, when he performed “Lule Lule”, a song central to the Arbëresh identity, during the Notte della Taranta live broadcast on RAI Uno.
Arbëresh associations explain that their support stems from a desire to bring a piece of Calabria’s Arbëresh history and tradition to the Sanremo stage.
In a noteworthy recognition, the prestigious Accademia della Crusca has lauded the lyrics of Brunori’s song “L’Albero delle noci” (The Walnut Tree), presented at Sanremo. The renowned academy has named Brunori’s lyrics as the best of the competition.
“While many songs rely on repetitive structures lacking originality, very few artists stand out with a refined and authentic language. The Calabrian singer-songwriter shines with poetic and sophisticated lyrics. The quality of writing, the intensity of imagery, and the depth of the message, this is a true masterpiece,” stated Accademia della Crusca in the Italian press.
Based in Florence, Accademia della Crusca is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious linguistic research institutions.
