“Karnavalet” – Carnivals Returns to TKOB with Inva Mula’s Direction and a Fresh Cast

For three consecutive nights, Karnavalet (Carnivals) will light up the stage at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet (TKOB), with performances set for March 24, 25, and 26. Artists are in their final rehearsals, preparing to bring this beloved operetta back to life.

First premiered at TKOB on February 5, 1978, Karnavalet features music by Avni Mula, a libretto by Luigj Gurakuqi, and was originally conducted by Fiqiri Kraja. The production was directed by Dhimitër Pecani, with stage design and costumes by Ksenofon Dilo and Hysen Devolli. The lively operetta starred some of TKOB’s most celebrated artists, including Rozmari Jorganxhi, Xhovana Doko, Tatjana Kora, Shqipe Zani, Emine Gjata, Vangjo Kosta, Janaq Mici, Luiza Papa, Zeliha Sina, Hysen Koçia, Gjergj Sulioti, Ibrahim Tukiçi, Guri Kamenica, Agim Quku, Bedri Belba, Lefter Besho, Gaqo Zdruli, Ndrek Shkjezi, Stefi Panariti, and Qirjako Qiramixhi.

Now, Karnavalet returns with a fresh interpretation under the direction of Inva Mula, featuring Elda Laro as conductor and Dritan Lumshi leading the choir. The new cast includes Solen Alla, Ivana Hoxha, Vikena Kamenica, Ramona Tullumani, Armando Likaj, Dorina Selimaj, Renisa Laçka, Erlind Zeraliu, Artur Vera, and more.

The story follows Nikollaq and Olimbia’s comedic quest to find the perfect husband for their 30-year-old daughter, Afroviti. The task proves challenging, as Olimbia insists on one non-negotiable condition: besides a dowry, Afroviti must also have a piano. Meanwhile, Nikollaq is unwilling to part with 1,000 Napoleons (currency of the time), making the tale all the more entertaining.
