McAllister urges dialogue in Tirana, warns against polarization and violence

The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee visited Tirana for two days, February 16–18. The delegation focused on Albania’s EU integration progress and the need to strengthen political dialogue.
Committee Chair David McAllister met with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Parliament Speaker Elisa Spiropali, majority and opposition representatives, and EU ambassadors. He delivered a clear message to Albania’s political leaders.
“We support Albania’s path to EU membership,” McAllister said. “We value the progress, including the opening of negotiation chapters. However, the enlargement process depends on merit and meeting all criteria. Albanian authorities still must implement reforms and align national legislation with EU standards.”
He stressed that all political forces in Albania must keep European integration a shared priority. McAllister expressed concern over rising political polarization.
“We recognize EU integration as a priority for every party. Yet political divisions remain high. The majority must engage the opposition and bring it into discussions. The opposition must participate fully. Violent protests have no place in a functioning democracy. Albanian authorities must continue aligning laws with EU standards and ensure effective implementation,” he said.
McAllister highlighted three key priorities:
-
Strengthen the fight against corruption. Albania has made progress, but officials must fully enforce laws and prevent political interference in the justice system.
-
Carry out a full and genuine electoral reform. Authorities must implement all ODIHR recommendations before the next elections.
-
Guarantee and strengthen media freedom and freedom of expression. These rights remain essential for a functioning democracy.
In conclusion, McAllister said the delegation’s visit clearly demonstrates EU support.
“This visit shows the European Parliament’s commitment to Albania’s EU path and its engagement in building a European future,” he said.
