“Museum of Memory” in Shkodër: Rama pledges to turn it into a cultural and historical landmark

Shkodër is set to benefit from two ambitious projects that will transform its cultural and infrastructural landscape. One focuses on redeveloping the area surrounding Shkodër’s Mosque, while the other involves the creation of the Museum of Memory, dedicated to documenting the crimes of the communist dictatorship and the history of religion in Albania.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, present at the event, emphasized that these projects will serve as key cultural and historical landmarks, enhancing Shkodër’s appeal as a major destination. He described the transformation as an opportunity to merge the past with the present, adding value and promoting tourism. The government, in collaboration with the Municipality of Shkodër, will bear the primary financial responsibility for these initiatives.
“These are two transformative projects for Shkodër,” Rama stated. “The first acknowledges the city’s past by openly confronting the wounds inflicted by the communist dictatorship. The second will revitalize the city center, turning the Great Mosque’s park into a vibrant public space that serves the community across generations. I am confident these projects will significantly enhance Shkodër’s international profile, with the Museum of Memory playing a central role in preserving and showcasing our history. This will bring more tourists, increased revenue, and greater recognition for the city.”
He assured that the government would take on the main financial burden, particularly for the Museum of Memory, while collaborating with the Muslim community and the Mufti of Shkodër to secure additional funding for the Grand Mosque square. “This long-overdue transformation of Shkodër began 30 years late, but it will not stop. We are committed to giving the Northern Capital the support it needs to foster economic growth and sustainable tourism,” Rama added. In addition to these cultural projects, a national initiative is underway to develop modern parking infrastructure in Shkodër, improving traffic flow and enhancing the city’s architectural appeal.
“We are working with the Albanian Development Fund on a new underground and above-ground parking project. This will not only ease congestion but also introduce structures that serve as architectural landmarks,” Rama concluded.
