November 28 – Albania celebrates Independence Day

TIRANA, November 28 – Albania celebrates today the 113th anniversary of its Independence, one of the most important and beloved dates for Albanians everywhere. On November 28, 1912, in Vlora, Ismail Qemali raised the red-and-black flag. With this act, he proclaimed Albania’s independence and started the journey of the newly independent Albanian state.
As every year, the country is filled with a festive atmosphere. At the same time, major cities are decorated with flags. Cultural and educational institutions have organized various activities, including concerts, exhibitions, and tributes to historical figures who contributed to the country’s freedom. Meanwhile, streets, squares, and promenades are dominated by red-and-black colours. This turns the day into a celebration of national identity.
November 28 carries a dual significance in Albanian history. In addition to the declaration of independence in 1912, this date is linked to the year 1443. At that time, the national hero George Kastrioti Skanderbeg raised the Albanian flag in Kruja. This marked the beginning of his fight to free Albanian lands from Ottoman conquest.
Known as Flag Day, the holiday unites Albanians in Albania, Kosova, North Macedonia, Montenegro, the Presheva Valley, and across the wider diaspora. Likewise, in Kosova, November 28 is an official holiday. It was established during the government of former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, reflecting the nationwide importance of the date.
Today, on the 113th anniversary of independence, Albanians remember history. They honor sacrifices and celebrate the symbol that unites them: the red-and-black flag.
