Osmani tells BBC: Kosovo sets example in post-war peacebuilding

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said Kosovo is a model for building peace after war. She recalled the conflict and the crucial role of international allies.

First, Osmani highlighted the impact of U.S. and allied intervention. “Twenty-six years ago, Kosovo was destroyed. Genocide threatened our people. The U.S., the U.K., and other democracies saved lives. We gained peace, freedom, and sovereignty,” she said.

Next, she explained Kosovo’s decision to join the new “Peace Board.” The move reflects Kosovo’s historical experience and the need for active peacebuilding. She added that this body allows Kosovo to act where the UN Security Council often stalls.

Moreover, Osmani addressed concerns about sitting near Russia. She noted that Russia has no veto power in the new organization. “It is better to join where peace cannot be blocked,” she said.

She also clarified that Kosovo faces no mandatory membership fees. Contributions are voluntary, and the statute sets no financial obligations.

Finally, Osmani emphasized Kosovo’s active role. She called the country a “beacon of light” and a success story in democracy and peace. Kosovo will share its experience to help other nations build lasting peace.

In conclusion, she said: “Now is our time to give back the help we received and contribute to global peace.”
