Today, Korça commemorated the 108th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Autonomous Region of Korça. Mayor Sotiraq Filo shared footage on social media of a vibrant parade showcasing traditional costumes from across the Korça region. The parade took place along the city’s main boulevard.  

Niko Peleshi, leader of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, highlighted the historical significance of Themistokli Gërmenji’s courageous act of raising the national flag. In a social media post, he described it as a moment of bravery and patriotism that cemented Korça’s role as a pivotal center for Albania’s independence.  

“This day reminds us of the sacrifice and determination of those who fought for our identity and freedom. Korça, proud of its history, remains a symbol of patriotism and national values,” Peleshi wrote.  

The declaration of autonomy in Korça was achieved with the support of the French army. Themistokli Gërmenji, prefect of the Autonomous Republic of Korça, raised the national flag alongside Colonel Henry Descoin.  

The administration of the Korça region was entrusted to a 14-member council, balanced between Christian and Muslim representatives. The council oversaw the governance and functioning of public services. According to the Protocol of December 10, 1916, Korça was an “autonomous” region administered by Albanians under French protection.  

However, on February 16, 1918, the French command assumed direct administration of Korça.  

The execution of Themistokli Gërmenji on November 7, 1917, significantly weakened Albania’s national movement. Subsequently, French security forces arrested his close associates, including Police Director Qamil Panariti and Commissioner Mehmet Pupe. Despite this, the Albanian flag continued to be raised alongside the French flag, and schools in the region remained open, continuing their educational mission.  

In May 1920, French forces withdrew from Korça, bringing an end to the region’s “autonomous” status.
