Today, 621st anniversary of the birth of our national hero, George Kastrioti Skanderbeg

TIRANA, May 6 – Today marks the 621st anniversary of the birth of national hero George Kastrioti Skanderbeg. He was born on 6 May 1405 in a noble family in Dibër. He was the son of John Kastrioti. He stands as one of the most prominent figures in Albanian history. He also represents the founder of the medieval Albanian state.

Skanderbeg entered history as a military strategist in defensive warfare. He led a small army against larger and better equipped Ottoman forces. He secured major victories in multiple battles. He also led the struggle for Albanian independence and worked for political and state unity.

In 1444, he convened the League of Lezha, using this assembly to lay the foundations of an organised Albanian state structure.

George Kastrioti then led the united Albanian army in a series of campaigns. He won the Battle of Torvioll, later achieved 22 major victories against the Ottoman Empire. Kruja served as the centre of his military command.

Skanderbeg operated in a strategic position between East and West. He supported the King of Naples in the Treaty of Gaeta. He backed King Ferdinand during the civil war of 1460–1461. In 1463, he commanded forces linked to Pope Pius II’s crusade. He passed on 17 January 1468 at the age of 63.

European historians describe Skanderbeg as a leader who stopped Ottoman expansion toward Western Europe. They also recognise him as a symbol of resistance during that period.

The Skanderbeg era in the 15th century shaped Albanian spiritual life. It also strengthened national consciousness among Albanians over time.
