Underwater cultural heritage: Hidden treasures of history

TIRANA, August 21 – International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage takes place every year on August 21. The day promotes the protection of cultural heritage submerged in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes.
On August 21, 2022, UNESCO launched the first international underwater archaeology mission with the participation of 8 countries. The international day recognizes the contribution of underwater cultural heritage to science, education and the cultural identity of peoples. It also honours those who work to protect it.
Underwater cultural heritage includes traces of human activity that lie beneath water and hold historical, archaeological or cultural value. These include shipwrecks, ancient ports and settlements, archaeological structures, historical objects and submerged landscapes.
UNESCO and other organizations warn about threats to this heritage. They also promote responsible and sustainable tourism and call for an end to illegal activities.
At the same time, the international day brings people and countries together around a global effort to protect underwater cultural heritage. This aims to preserve these sites for younger and future generations.
