Vienna Institute experts say Albania and Montenegro lead in EU membership queue

TIRANA, January 28 – Experts at the International Institute for Economic Studies in Vienna said Albania and Montenegro are first in line for EU membership. The European Commission considers their accession realistic and not a result of favoritism.
The panel examined geopolitical and economic trends in Europe. Experts noted challenges for other candidate countries, including Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ukraine. They highlighted weak institutions, rising authoritarianism, and economic constraints.
Panelists said gradual integration offers a practical path. It allows candidate countries to access EU funds and budgets. Accelerated accession requires equal treatment for all candidates. Albania and Montenegro may join the EU before 2030. Other countries face longer paths due to political and structural obstacles.
