Young Artists Transform Communist-Era Testimonies into Powerful Visual Narratives

Today, the Institute for the Study of Communist Crimes and Consequences inaugurated the exhibition “Voices of Memory” at the Pyramid of Tirana, showcasing artworks by students from the “Jan Kukuzeli” High School of Arts in Durrës.

The students’ works—drawings, paintings, and installations—are inspired by the testimonies of those persecuted under the communist regime, as documented by the Institute in its “Voices of Memory” series.

ISKK’s Executive Director, Çelo Hoxha, described the exhibition as a vivid embodiment of the necessity for younger generations to confront and understand the past, ensuring that the crimes of the communist era are never forgotten.

The exhibition’s curators, Brisejda Lala, head of ISKK’s Scientific Research Sector, and Franc Priska, a painting instructor at “Jan Kukuzeli” High School, guided attendees through the creative process. They emphasized how students, through their artistic expression, have transformed historical memory into tangible visual narratives.

In a deeply personal moment, the young artists themselves shared their experiences of uncovering the past. Many spoke of family members—parents and grandparents—who had lived through the very injustices now depicted on canvas, offering visitors a poignant reflection on history’s enduring echoes.
