6 years without Adem Demaçi, the man who fought and suffered for the nation

Today marks the 6th anniversary of the passing of Adem Demaçi, the writer and symbol of Albanian national resistance.
Born on February 26, 1936, in Prishtina, Demaçi hailed from the village of Lupç in Podujevë. He was a prominent activist for the national cause during the Yugoslav era, fighting for Kosovo’s equality with the other Yugoslav republics.
In 1958, Demaçi was sentenced to 5 years in prison for his writings and political and patriotic beliefs. By 1963, he had founded the “Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians” in Prishtina, which had a distinctive national program aimed at liberating and uniting Albanian territories into a single state. This movement expanded to various centers in Kosovo and other Albanian territories under Yugoslav rule. Due to his continued patriotic activities, Demaçi was later sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Demaçi spent approximately 28 years in prison under the harsh regime of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, with several years in solitary confinement. For this reason, he earned the title “Mandela of Europe.”
Upon his release in 1990, Demaçi led the Council for Human Rights and Freedoms until 1995. In 1991, he was honored with the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament.
During the 1998-1999 period, he served as the political spokesperson for the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in Prishtina.
After the war, Demaçi remained actively involved in civic life but did not receive any official position in the newly established state of Kosovo.
He was also the author of several books, including the novel “Gjarpijtë e gjakut” (The Blood Serpents). This literary work featured clear political allusions and metaphors, advocating that Albanians in Kosovo should set aside their internal conflicts and direct their efforts against the Serbian occupier. The book was written in the vernacular to ensure it was accessible to all inhabitants of Albanian territories.
